So you want to teach with VIPKid, but aren’t sure if you meet the VIPKid teacher requirements?
While teaching English online with VIPKid isn’t for everyone, the good news is that you don’t need years of classroom teaching experience to qualify.
All you have to do is meet the four basic VIPKid teacher requirements. If you do, then you’ll be able to join the ranks of happy VIPKid teachers making money from home.
Ready to find out if you qualify to teach with VIPKid? Then keep reading.
Requirement #1 – A Bachelor’s Degree
The first of the VIPKid teacher requirements is to have a bachelor’s degree. This means that if you have never completed your college degree, you won’t be able to teach for VIPKid.
The good news is that you don’t need a formal teaching degree to be a VIPKid teacher. As long as you have a bachelor’s degree, you’ll be just fine.
And yes, VIPKid does verify that you actually have a degree, so be honest.
Requirement #2 – One Year Of Teaching Experience
The second of the VIPKid teacher requirements is to have one year of teaching experience.
The good news is that this doesn’t have to be formal teaching in a classroom. There are plenty of informal teaching experiences that also meet the basic VIPKid teacher requirements.
Examples of Teaching Experience
For instance, you could have experience teaching children at church, as a volunteer at the library, as a daycare worker, or in any other position where you “taught” kids in some capacity.
I had experience teaching kids in a classroom. But I’ve also homeschooled my children, taught Sunday School and worked camp counselor in the past.
My husband was approved and he had no formal classroom experience. But he did volunteer in an ESL ministry during college. He also served as a children’s pastor and worked with kids at the church on a regular basis.
Some other examples could include:
- Volunteering at the library/school
- Working at a daycare
- Homeschool your child
- Working as a camp counselor
- Teaching Sunday School
One Year Combined
The VIPKid teacher requirements don’t say that your teaching experience needs to be consecutive, meaning one year straight.
Instead, you can take all of your “pieces” of teaching experience and add them together to get one year.
For example, maybe you taught Sunday School once a month for 6 months.
Does that only count as 6 days of teaching experience (once a month x 6 months)? No, that is 6 months of teaching experience.
This requirement is simply designed to make sure you know how to work with kids and have experience teaching them.
Note: Keep in mind that if you say you have less than one year of teaching experience on the VIPKid application, you will be automatically disqualified.
Requirement #3 – Eligible To Work In The USA or Canada
Another one of the VIPKid teacher requirements is that you must be eligible to work in the US or Canada.
This requirement doesn’t need a lot of explanation, but I do think it’s noteworthy to explain that you don’t have to live in the US or Canada.
In other words, you can travel the world while you teach or live abroad as long as you are eligible to work in the US or Canada.
Requirement #4 – A Computer and High-Speed Internet Access
The fourth of the four basic VIPKid teacher requirements is that you must have a computer and high-speed internet access.
Streaming video and audio across the internet as you teach a child in China takes a long of bandwidth. So you’ll need to make sure your internet if fairly fast.
They recommend a 20Mbps download speed. You can run a speedtest to find out your current internet speeds. Contact your internet provider to increase your speed.
VIPKid also recommends that you connect to your router via an ethernet cable to ensure a constant high-speed connection. Wifi can be a little spotty sometimes. So if you want to ensure a rock solid connection throughout your entire class, an ethernet cable is a good idea.
Lesser Known VIPKid Teacher Requirements
In addition to the published VIPKid teacher requirements, there are also some lesser known things that can get you disqualified. While you may be able to pass your initial VIPKid application, you’ll have a hard time making it past the second stage of the VIPKid hiring process.
A Non-American Accent
If you live in the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you’ll need to be able to speak with a clear American English accent. VIPKid advertises their services as American English tutoring.
So if a Chinese parent finds out you are teaching their child to speak a different style of English, VIPKid would lose customers.
Difficult To Understand or Improper English
Even if you speak American English, if you slur your words or use improper grammar as a norm, you’ll have a hard time getting hired to teach with VIPKid.
Chinese parents want to ensure their children are learning proper English and are being taught by teachers who can be clearly understood.
Summary – Do You Meet The VIPKid Teacher Requirements?
